SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - One after another, 80 First Brigade soldiers rolled up to Savannah Harley-Davidson where they spent time hearing about safety from the bike techs.
After serving in dangerous places like Baghdad, some troops come home and wind up in more danger on the road. In addition to the adrenaline of riding on the open road, the high price of gasoline may be some of the reasons there are more bikes on post.
Lt. Cory Sharbo scratched a long time itch when he bought his bike after returning from Iraq. "My platoon sergeant had one and I've been interested in riding with them in these big bike rides they hold," he said. "But this ride was about more than fun."
After the accident on Truman Parkway this past Sunday, SMG Ray Curtis, who organized the class, hopes the soldiers that just got back from Iraq will pay more attention.
"They think that they're invincible and nothing can hurt them and they're bullet proof and we want to focus them on the safety aspects of riding," he said."Our soldiers are too valuable to lose to nonsense."
Something as simple and fixable as low tire pressure or loose brake hoses can be as much trouble as hotdogging. The more experienced riders hope the brotherhood will help keep soldiers safe.
